After Dark

An excerpt

It begins at 8pm
That’s when the change gets started
With front doors parted
And the summer light slanting in
Slouching, prowling, transforming
Into a late-night jazz recording of
Piccolo preteens gathered round the
Local shops, and bus stops
The brass sliding of men
From the slipstreams of work
Into nearby bars
Whilst the streets empty of cars
And the lamplight trickles on
The colour of warning-signs

An excerpt

White wings over white hawthorns dart across green fields and wild hedgerows exhaling white
whirls of new dreams to cloudless skies and piercing the still with white snatches that catch on blades and blue jeans and windscreens and wing mirrors
